Australian Guide to Legal Citation 4th Edition

Guidance on using the Australian Guide to Legal Citation referencing style

Citing UK cases

Citing United Kingdom case law

See AGLC Part V — Foreign Domestic Sources > 24 United Kingdom > rule 24.1

Australian Guide to Legal Citation ('AGLC') references for United Kingdom cases decided 1865 onwards should appear in the same format as Australian cases in line with chapter 2.

  • Cite the Law Reports authorised versions where applicable – see rule 24.1.2 for abbreviations for the different series, eg KB, QB, AC, Ch etc. The Law Reports are available in full text in the Library's ICLR database [UniSQ log in required].
  • Use the Judicial Officers’ titles in rule 24.1.6
  • Example: Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co [1893] 1 QB 256.

Nominate Reports

For older (pre-1865 cases), include the nominate report citation followed by the English Reports or otherwise Revised Reports citation as shown in rule 24.1.3. For example:

Russel v Lee (1661) 1 Lev 86; 83 ER 310.
