Guidance on using the Australian Guide to Legal Citation referencing style

Sources referring to other sources

Sources referring to other sources

See AGLC Part I — General Rules > rule 1.3

The Australian Guide to Legal Citation ('AGLC') states that you should generally consult the original source and directly cite that source where possible.

If this is not possible, or if it's important to show the relationship between the two sources, use an appropriate phrase to connect the two separate citations, such as:

  • quoting / quoted in
  • citing / cited in
  • discussing / discussed in.

Examples

1 Balmain New Ferry Co Ltd v Robertson (1906) 4 CLR 379, discussed in Nickolas James et al, Business and Company Law (Wiley, 2017) 199.

2 Re Liveri [2006] QCA 152 [22] (de Jersey CJ, McMurdo P, Williams JA), quoting Re AJG [2004] QCA 88 (de Jersey CJ).
