Referencing overview

Referencing overview

Referencing (or citation) refers to the academic practice of acknowledging the source of ideas and information used to write or construct an assignment or paper. Proper citation is an important skill as it:

  • reduces the chances of a claim of plagiarism being brought against you as either a student or as a professional
  • enables readers of your work to locate your sources
  • forms part of ethical research by acknowledging the work of others.
