Publishing in journals

Technical Terms around article publishing: A brief list

When developing your publication strategy, you may come across the following terms:

SNIP

Source-Normalised Impact per Paper (SNIP)

  • It is a sophisticated metric used to evaluate the contextual citation impact of scholarly journals across different subject areas.
  • SNIP adjusts for variations in citation patterns across disciplines.

CiteScore

What is CiteScore?

  • CiteScore is calculated by Scopus, a comprehensive abstract and citation database.
  • It assesses the citation impact of journals by considering the total number of citations received by articles published in a specific journal over a certain period.

Journal Ranking

Quartile of journal

  • In the context of scholarly journals, quartiles are based on the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) or CiteScore.
  • Quartiles divide journals into four groups based on their impact within a category. 25% of journals are in each group.
  • Scopus and Web of Science are the two main ranking databases we use, neither of which indexes ALL journals, only a subsection.

Quartile Ranks:

  • Here’s how quartiles are defined:
    • Q1: Highest ranked journals in a category
    • Q2: Moderately high-ranked journals
    • Q3: Moderately low-ranked journals
    • Q4: Lowest ranked journals in a category.
