Alternative metrics

Alternative metrics, also known as altmetrics, offer a valuable tool for evaluating the online visibility of scholarly research. They provide complementary measures at the article level, beyond traditional citation-based metrics. Altmetrics capture attention from diverse sources, including:

  1. Social media interactions: Likes, retweets, and comments on platforms like Twitter.
  2. Public policy documents: References in policy papers or government reports.
  3. Patent citations: Mentions in patent documents.
  4. News articles and mainstream media: Coverage in newspapers, magazines, or TV.
  5. Blog posts: Discussions and reviews on blogs.

These metrics help researchers understand the broader impact and engagement with their work beyond academic citations.
