Referencing styles

EndNote referencing styles

Output (referencing) styles change the way your references display in your bibliography. EndNote comes pre-loaded with many of the most popular styles (including APA 7), as well as some specific journal styles.

You may need to download some additional output styles including UniSQ Harvard AGPS style and AGLC that are not pre-loaded. Please see the instructions below.

Referencing styles

From EndNote website:

  1. Open the EndNote Output Styles list
  2. Search for required output style
  3. Click Download
  4. Double-click the downloaded style file. It should open in EndNote.
  5. In EndNote, go to File > Save As
  6. Rename the style (if required) > click Save
  7. Click on File > Close Style.
  8. Choose Select Another Style in styles window. This is on the Summary tab at the bottom of the panel. 
  9. Select the required output style in Word to apply the style to your Word documents.

Download the Harvard AGPS referencing style (.ens file) from this site (you may need to log in with your USQ username and password)

  1. Double-click the downloaded style file. It should open in EndNote.
  2. In EndNote, go to File > Save As
  3. Rename the style (if required) > click Save
  4. Click on File > Close Style.
  5. Choose Select Another Style in styles window. This is on the Summary tab at the bottom of the panel. 
  6. Locate and select Harvard AGPS, and click Choose. The style is now listed in the styles window.
  7. Select the required output style in Word to apply the style to your Word documents. 

Note: installing AGLC alters the list of reference types available. This makes it unable to create APA or other referencing styles. If the majority of assignments are using another referencing style it may be better to create the AGLC references manually.

Step 1: Install the legal reference types

  • Right/Control click Reference Types Table.xml, and select Save link as
  • Open EndNote, and select Edit (on a Mac click EndNote), then Preferences/Settings and Reference Types
  • Select Import and locate the Reference Types Table.xml file
  • Select Open, Apply, then OK (on a Mac click Open > Save)
  • Close the Edit Preferences window.

Step 2: Install the AGLC style

  • Download AGLC4.ens
  • Open the file once downloaded. If prompted, select Open with EndNote
  • The style window opens - Select File > Save As
  • Rename file as AGLC4 (UTS). Select Save

Step 3: Select AGLC4 as your output style

  • Open EndNote library
  • Choose Select Another Style in styles window. This is on the Summary tab at the bottom of the panel. 
  • Locate and select AGLC4 (UTS), and click Choose. The style is now listed in the styles window.
