Backing up an EndNote library

Backing up an EndNote library

It is essential to regularly make a back up copy of your EndNote library so that if something goes wrong, you will always have a working copy of your library.

  • File > Compressed Library, a new window will open
  • In the pop-up window, check default options are selected
  • Click ‘OK’ on a Mac or ‘Next’ on a PC
  • Choose where to store your backup, give it a relevant name, and include the date.
  • Save the compressed file to an external hard drive or USB.

A new archived library (.enlx) will be created. The compressed library contains both the Endnote Library (.enl) and the data folder (.data). Make back-up (archived) copies of your library regularly, and store them on an external drive to prevent the loss of your working EndNote library on your computer.
If the compressed library is saved to OneDrive, the file must never be opened in that location – instead save the .enlx file to your computer desktop before opening.
