General

To avoid compatibility issues, check system requirements first.
If you already have a previous version of EndNote installed, back up existing EndNote libraries and uninstall earlier versions of the program.
Before running the installation program, close any Microsoft applications.
If you are close to completing your PhD or research project, it is recommended that you continue using your existing version.
Download EndNote from the University site so the program is within UniSQ’s subscription. Details are provided below.

Before downloading

Always have a backup of your EndNote library and current Word document.
Check that you are storing EndNote libraries on the hard drive of your computer, not on a cloud drive such as OneDrive, iCloud, DropBox etc.

Follow these steps to download EndNote:
- Close ALL Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Download the Windows installation file for EndNote 21 using your UniSQ network username and password.
- Right-click the installation .exe file in your Downloads folder, and choose "run as administrator"
Go to the Windows Start menu, and open the EndNote program.
It will prompt you to open an existing library, or to create a new library.
Note that libraries should not be created in cloud locations as they are subject to corruption over time.
You can delete the original installation .exe file from your downloads folder

Quit Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint). You must QUIT the applications, not merely close application windows (Use Command + Q)
Download the EndNote Mac installer.package file.
In the Downloads folder, double-click the disk image or package file (looks like an open box). If the provided installer doesn’t open automatically, open it, then follow the onscreen instructions.

When the installation is complete, go to Applications and open EndNote. You may be asked to update the program. It is best to use the latest version available.
When creating your new Library (File > New), do not save your EndNote library in cloud storage. EndNote libraries stored in iCloud, even when stored on both the hard drive and online, are subject to corruption over time.
The best place on a Mac to store your library is in your Applications Folder or in a new folder under the Home directory.

Close all Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
Go to MacXtra (located in Applications). If not on campus you will need to use VPN.
Search for 'EndNote' > Click 'Install'
Open the EndNote program to create a new EndNote library.
