Formatting a bibliography
A Bibliography appears at the end of your assignment and lists all the sources you have cited in your writing.
The sources you list are called ‘bibliographical citations’, but you only need to title this section as ‘Bibliography’. Oxford referencing style does not use the titles, ‘References’ or ‘Referencing List’.
Bibliographies differ from footnotes in terms of the sequence of details and punctuation. Documenting your research sources according to the discipline you are studying is an essential academic requirement and critical for ensuring academic integrity.
Bibliography and layout:
- The Bibliography appears on a new page at the end of your writing. Bibliography appears at the top of the page, bold and centred.
- Sources are listed alphabetically by author surname.
- For history students, in essays over 5000 words, list your primary sources in a separate section above your secondary sources section, both alphabetically by author surname. Marks are not lost if you choose to separate your primary sources and secondary source in an essay under 5000 words, but ensure they are listed alphabetically.
- A full list of figures should be placed at the end of your work including figure number, artist name, artwork title, year, and medium.
