Introduction to evidence-based practice for the health sciences

Assess: evaluate impacts & outcomes

Assess: evaluate impacts & outcomes

There are two parts to this final step:

  • Evaluation of the change in practice.
  • Self-evaluation and evaluation of the EBP process.

Evaluate the EBP process

Self-evaluation of performance in EBP is vital to learning. You should ask yourself questions such as:

  1. Did I develop a well-formulated, answerable question?
  2. Am I able to determine the sources of evidence?
  3. Have I critically appraised all aspects of the evidence?
  4. Have I considered all aspects of EBP when applying the evidence?
  5. Has the process resulted in better clinical outcomes or processes?

The questions in these self-evaluation checklists (adapted from Strauss et al., 2018) may be useful tools to support your own reflection on how you have undertaken the EBP process. Download a checklist by clicking on a file below.

The NSW Clinical Excellence Commission has developed a suite of resources to support the development of reflective practice skills, including tools and tip sheets, to help you evaluate the EBP process.
